Dr. Alan Rogers has been teaching evolution to college students for thirty years. Until recently, he seldom spent much time arguing that evolution happens. He took that for granted and launched directly into his real love--the mechanisms of evolution. This has lately begun to look like a mistake. According to polling data, most Americans doubt that evolution is a real phenomenon. How can one teach students how evolution works if they doubt that it happens at all?

As soon as this dawned on him, he began looking for a text on evidence--something to assign during the first couple of weeks of his introductory course. Many of the books he found seemed to assume that the reader needed only to be told about evolution, not convinced.

In the end he wrote his own book, which covers the evidence for evolution and nothing more. It does not merely summarize received wisdom; it recounts the give and take between skeptical scientists who first asked "how can we be sure" and then answered those questions with evidence.

New Science Building and Health Professions Building for the College of Science & Health at Utah Valley University

The new Science Building for the College of Science Health at Utah Valley University was officially opened Friday, April 20, 2012. Expanding on the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony, UVU officials and the members of the Utah Legislature crushed the ribbon after dousing it with liquid nitrogen. The new building is the beginning of a new era in scientific research and study at Utah Valley University featuring state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and research equipment. Daniel Fairbanks is the Associate Dean of the College of Science and Health at Utah Valley University. He spoke about the Genetics of Autism during a symposium series for the College of Science and Health.

The Wasatch fault is regarded as posing the greatest earthquake threat in Utah, yet this fault has produced no significant historical quakes. In this lecture, Dr. Horns talks about why we think that the Wasatch fault poses such a threat, despite this lack of historical activity, why we cannot say with any certainty when the next large earthquake will occur on the Wasatch fault, and why we really shouldn't even focus on the date of the next earthquake anyway. This talk provides an introduction to Utah's Wasatch fault and the methods geologists use to study prehistoric earthquakes on the fault.

The Noyce Scholarship has helped me and my family stay out of debt. My goal from the start of college was to graduate debt free and it may not have happened without the Noyce. This was particularly important to me because of lower teacher wages. If I had needed to go into debt an unusually large portion of my income would have been spent on paying back the debt supporting a wife and child as I work through college.
